How This Relates to Sociology
The issues of food aid and food dumping relate to poverty, inequality, and social stratification. These issues show how people in some parts of the world are so much poorer than in other parts. The purpose of this website is to examine what richer countries are doing to help developing countries, why it isn't working, and what changes need to be made to allow developing countries to grow. The video on the "Solutions" page refers to hunger as 'the world's most solvable problem," which it truly is. As discussed in the beginning of chapter 8, it has become important in the modern world for everyone to have a fair chance at success. Poverty, however, stands in the way of success for people in developing countries (Arum, Manza, & Torche, 2013). Food aid is the way in which we try to help level the playing field, so to speak, at least at the very basic level. If everyone has the basic necessities, their chances of success greatly increase. By helping developing countries by giving them food aid, richer countries are trying to help them succeed. This is why food aid creates such a dilemma, especially as it has been proven to do more harm than good in many cases. Certain political and economic factors stand in the way from having effective food aid programs.
